“then the Lord God said ‘It is not good that the man should be

alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’”
In Genesis, God we read as God calls Eve a helper, an ezer kenedgo. The word ezer translates as “helper,” and the word kenedgo means “to accompany.” We quickly learn that God created women to accompany man, in order to help them. Some translations refer to the word as a “help mate.”
But is that it? Were we destined to be measly helpers? Not quite! Something cool about the term “ezer” is that it is only used to reference women twice in the Bible, but it is used to reference someone else many more times throughout the Bible — God.
“There is none like God…who rides through the heavens to your help [ezer].”
Deuteronomy 33:26
“There is none like God…who rides through the heavens to your help [ezer].”
Deuteronomy 33:26
“Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help [ezer] and our shield.”
Psalm 33:20
“Blessed is he whose help [ezer] is the God of Jacob.”
Psalm 146:5
God choosing to call us ezer was not a small or demeaning decision. When you dive into scripture and realize that God himself was called “ezer” it quickly turns from being insignificant to a privilege.
Think about the main quality God demonstrates as a helper: He walks beside us as a source of strength and support. That’s exactly what the purpose of this magazine, this community, is. To provide a community that supports one another and helps one another grow, all while propelling the gospel forward.
