“I have nothing to wear,” has got to be one of the most common phrases in the world of girls.
I’m sure every single one of us has at some point or another scoured our closest in vain, only to feel like nothing we own inspires an outstanding outfit. I often find myself in this situation after a night of scrolling through Pinterest where I discover girls with impeccable style and feel inspired to totally revamp my own.
However, if you adapt to these few, simple solutions you will likely be able to avoid that feeling of dismay when you find your own wardrobe uninspiring. Here is your solution so you never have to open your closet and say, “I have nothing to wear,” again.
Invest In A Strong Foundation
When I was in high school I found myself in the “I have nothing to wear” predicament quite often.
Each morning I would open my closet to get dressed for the day and feel as though I had nothing. Or I would decide none of it was actually my taste. I began to discover one of the biggest hinderances to my wardrobe reaching its full potential was the fact that I hadn’t invested in the appropriate, quality neutrals.
Like many other things in life, an authentic and sensible wardrobe must be built on a strong foundation: neutrals. A soft white tee, skinny jeans, and sandals will always pair well with any other statement pieces in your closet.
It is wise to invest in pieces that are not only versatile in color and style, but that is of high quality as well. When buying unique, trendy items you can skimp out on quality. There is absolutely no need to spend extra to invest in the quality of a piece if that item is going to go out of style after this season.
On the other hand, the foundations of your wardrobe should be classics that you can wear for months, even years to come. This is where I strongly recommend investing in higher quality so that those key components of a stylish outfit will stand the test of time.
Our clothes go through a lot more wear and tear than we realize, so it’s important that the pieces we utilize most often can withstand it.
Shop With Purpose
When you initially hit the town on a shopping spree, it’s easy to be overcome with inspiration from the styles for the new season. You may find several pieces that grab your attention from the moment you walk in the door.
However, simply purchasing pieces that you like or that fit you well with no logical purpose for them in mind is one of the leading causes of the “I have nothing to wear” dilemma.
When you continually build up your closet with disjointed pieces that aren’t practical for you, rather than investing in well-designed classics, your wardrobe becomes more eclectic than cohesive. An eclectic closet it a hotbed for uninspired outfits. If you nip this problem in the bud, you won’t have to face this dilemma again.
All that to say, I am not totally discouraging you from following trends and exploring new pieces that spice up your personal look. My intention is for you to walk into a store with a goal. Walking into a boutique blindly is very dangerous, especially when you’re not looking for anything in particular.
If you keep in mind your current wardrobe and the steps you would like to take to transform it into something more inspiring, you will be much more efficient and successful in your shopping.
Outfit Prep
One of the easiest solutions to this “I have nothing to wear” dilemma is to simply prep your outfit beforehand. I often find myself feeling like I have nothing to wear when I haven’t been able to put time into planning my outfit and have to throw something on in a hurry.
Giving yourself time to plan out, and even try on your outfit before taking it out on the town allows for the experimentation you need to get it just right. When you’re feeling particularly desperate, I recommend combining pieces you don’t usually wear together.
You may have never thought to try your yellow blouse, wide-leg jeans and blue stilettos all together with your hair up, but today may be the day that refreshing mix is exactly what you’re desperate heart is in need of.
Oscar de la Renta once said, “Fashion is a trend. Style lives within a person”.
Regardless of the current fashion trends, you should always feel like you can represent your ow personal style well with whatever may occupy your closet at the moment. Several women feel uninspired by their wardrobes regularly, but they don’t have to.
You can use these easy, practical ways to ensure that you never have to hear yourself say “I have nothing to wear” ever again.
